Compare the Acura MDX

to the Lexus RX 350L and BMW X5

When it comes to premium performance SUVs, the Acura MDX makes its mark.

After skipping a year, the Acura MDX features an all-new model with an elegant interior and an excellent tech and safety suite. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ and wireless smartphone charging highlight the standard tech presence while a standard V6 or available turbocharged V6 engine, along with an all-new chassis and double-wishbone front suspension, highlight the Acura MDX's robust performance capabilities.

Despite this long list of strengths, we know Columbus customers want to make an informed buying decision for their next SUV. That's why Acura Columbus wants to show you how the new Acura MDX fares against other luxurious SUVs like the Lexus RX 350L and the BMW X5.

Acura MDX vs. Lexus RX 350L

Both these SUVs seat seven passengers, but the Lexus RX 350L - the longer wheelbase model - isn't as space-friendly as the Acura MDX, which offers more storage. The Acura MDX's latest model adds 2.4 inches of legroom in its third row. There's 16.3 cubic feet of storage behind the back row, 39.1 cubic feet behind the second row, and a total cargo volume of 71.4 cubic feet. All top the Lexus RX 350L's corresponding storage figures of 16, 32.6, and 58.5 cubic feet, respectively.

The Acura MDX has bigger 19-inch alloy wheels compared to the Lexus SUV's 18-inch alloy wheels. Only dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on the Lexus RX 350L, while the Acura MDX offers standard tri-zone automatic climate control. Wireless device charging isn't standard on the Lexus SUV, which only includes an 8-inch infotainment display.

The Acura MDX is far more packed with standard equipment, including wireless smartphone charging, USB ports in the first two rows, Amazon Alexa, CabinTalk technology, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen working in conjunction with Acura's True Touchpad Interface, wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, a panoramic sunroof, and a power tailgate.

Thanks to AcuraWatch, the Acura MDX's safety presence is far more advanced. This includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, road-departure mitigation, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic monitor, and a driver attention monitor.

The Acura MDX has a higher towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, compared to the Lexus RX 350L's maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The Lexus RX 350L, which earns 19/26 (city/highway) miles per gallon, is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. The Acura MDX, meanwhile, is also powered by a standard 3.5-liter V6 outputting 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. But optional all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine packing 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque are available in the Acura MDX, which also earns 19/26 miles per gallon.

Acura MDX vs. BMW X5

The Acura MDX is sold at a far lower MSRP than the BMW X5, as Columbus customers can save nearly $15,000 between base models. The BMW X5's high-performance models double in cost compared to the Acura MDX.

Columbus families can only fit five passengers in the BMW X5, compared to comfortable seating for seven passengers in the Acura MDX. Behind the second row, the BMW X5 offers less space at 33.9 cubic feet. The Acura MDX offers 39.1 cubic feet behind the second row. Its total cargo capacity of 71.4 cubic feet is nearly identical to the BMW X5's 72.3 cubic feet.

The BMW X5 only offers dual-zone automatic climate control, compared to the Acura MDX's tri-zone automatic climate control. The BMW X5 does feature Live Cockpit Pro, two standard 12.3-inch screens, and a digital driver information display. There is Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ connectivity, but it's not wireless like the MDX, and there are no USB ports in the second row like Acura's SUV.

The BMW X5 earns 21/26 miles per gallon when powered by the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine that produces 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. A 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine achieving 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque is available but only earns 16/22 miles per gallon.

Columbus motorists are better off driving the Acura MDX, with one of its V6 engines producing between 290 and 355 horsepower and 267 and 354 pound-feet of torque while earning 19/26 mils per gallon.
